The Order of the Teutonic Knights were some bad dudes. This is my fantastical/demonized representation of one such individual.

Here's a (very) basic rundown:

In the Early 1400s the Teutonic Knights were grown from the Holy Roman Empire (in present day Germany), and funded by the Polish, in an effort to destroy the Pagan presence in the Baltic. The Knights ended up raping, pillaging and slaughtering women and children throughout Poland and Lithuania. The Poles said "Eh.. shit my bad", joined forces with the Lithuanian army, and eventually defeated the Teutonic Order at the Battle of Grunwald in 1410.

The Knights have been used extensively throughout history as both a symbol of military might and as a symbol of barbarism (depending on which country was pushing the propaganda...)

Fantastic work here!!! Nice use of B&W!!!

Thank you! I originally did it with the intent to color it over the B&W but eh... maybe not. Need a break from this one or I'll over work it.

Great picture it looks very good! and you are right about the 1st battle of Tannenberg was a big defeat for the Teutonic order. but remember they were not all bad [link] has the history on the order just in case you are interested, and remember the Teutonic Oder is still around today.

you got it preety all wrong :) (not the pic, the pic OWNS teh universe) teutonic order was founded for the purpouse of crusades in the middle east. when crusades ended one of the polish dukes (poland had been divided into many separate states at the time) invited them so they would help him fight the pagan tribe of prussians. (hence the later german-ish state name). knights DID whiped out the prussians as planned. what the polish duke did not planed is that the knights wanted money for their work. since the polish duke couldnt pay, knights took his land, and had been a M.A.J.O.R. pain in the ass for poland practicly till 1945 when russkies kicked the germans out of there. i'd fav this pic, but i hate (german)prussians, their ansestors and their children more than german from any other part of deutshland :)

Thanks! Glad you like the picture. Besides restating what i already wrote (i neglected to mention the crusades, true) albeit in a more scholarly fashion, I don't see how I got it all wrong though haha. And the Teutonic Order was severely neutered after Grunwald. The Germans in general did end up being a big pain in the ass for Poland (and Europe) until 1945. But in my opinion the Communists were worse...

Very interesting, thanks for the link! Yeah I know a bunch of the old orders are still around today, but exist in the form of benevolent monastic societies and the like. This representation is admittedly biassed, and I'm sure that there were probably many more good men in this order than history remembers.
